Analyzing a picture

Pg. 132

1. This picture first appears in sport magazine that are giving to consumers what type of trends that are here now and that will best suit them for sport. The audience is everyone who does sports. The speaker is the people that are selling Nike products.

2. I first notice a big Nike sign. Since everything else is small and the Nike sign is place in the middle of the picture and is very, my overall first impression was that this was an advertisement for Nike.

3. The visual address that Nike is obviously a sport brand since the symbol is placed really big in the middle of the people playing on a golf field. With the slogan written in big "Just do it" it shows that Nike is a sport brand that motivates people to work harder or achieve their goal.

4. The text tells a story. It explains that Nike can suit everyone at any time especially during the day for a relaxing hangout with friends. With the few objects and the amount of space between everything you can see that it is a very calm and settled moment between two people.

5. The picture makes you feel relaxed and motivated. First you can see how calm the setting is with a nice sunny day with a blue sky and secondly you can imagine how it is to be on top of hill playing golf in this sunny day full of fresh air with a friend.

6. The figure is both realistic and caricature. It is realistic because it shows to people playing golf normally but it is caricature because out of all the grass that has been cut short, the Nike sign is the only big and large object in the picture.

7, 8, 9. In out mind, we can obviously see that this is an advertisement as i said earlier. After seen this picture we would surely want to buy the product. Not only for the short motivational slogan but also for the big nike symbol placed in a relaxing setting.

Pg. 96

1.Same-sex classrooms should not be a problem for students in grades 10 through 12 because it allows them to socialize better and also be opened with all types of gender.
It is a closed thesis because it states the main point and also it has the word because. It is effective because it goes straight to the point of what i am trying to say.

2. Although E.M Froster's position in choosing between betraying his country against betraying his friends might be a fair choice, without his country he would have not been who he is today in the sense of his culture.
It is a counter argument because of the word although. It also shows how I'm disagreeing with the author, how i am challenging him.

3. Gun control who is a major issue in the u.s and who has the tendency to increase the death rate of innocent people is just one of the controversial problem that could be fix without affecting anyone.
A Open thesis because it does not states all the points of how it could be fixed. I can talk and talk until i have made my point. I do not limit my argument.

4. I agree with the fact that advertising limits people's will to choose because it has many hidden messages and persuasive methods that makes you think that what the advertisement has, no one else has it and that it is the best of all.
It is a closed thesis because of the word the word because followed by the main points that will be elaborated on. It focuses on the most important point of the essay's prompt.

5.  Teachers should be completely strict with its students when it comes to plagiarism because they will allow the future generation to be trustworthy people and have a open mind in every subject, be able to think outside the box.
It is a closed thesis and it is effective because this is not a very big subject and you can go straight to the point and write a short essay out of it.

Pg. 90

Its claim of fact is that Miley cyrus maturity rate is evolving too quickly and that she is becoming provocatively and sexually public.

One of its main criteria is the popularity of the song 'we can stop' by Miley Cyrus

He would receive many thumbs up as much as many thumbs down.

He had given many examples following each part of the song that he was analyzing or reviewing.

He is talking about the obvious part of the song to support his claim and also to make the people realize that even Miley is not trying to hide her message and that there is no need for denial

He even went into the religious part of the song by adding the devils name and by asking us a rhetorical question to make us wonder, " why does she stick her tongue out so much" and previously from that the author spoke about how she is affecting young girls' status and how parents who noticed react.

Another criteria are that the author proves that his knowledge of the new Miley is just based on a obvious observation. He also does not know what as gone to Miley.

As his claim of value, he agrees that she is not a bad singer compared to others and that’s a reason

Tone (p.43)
The British minister wrote his speech in a sympathetic way. He kept on showing that he feels bad that they have to switch governments because it was the best one for the people. He kept on telling the people that he understands if they get mad, he also doesn’t like the switch himself but they have too.

He also wrote his speech on a purposeful way because he announced to the public what will happen so that they do not freak out when the switch of government happens. He told them that so that they do not protest nor revolt against the new type of government that is going to take place.

Appeal to ethos, pathos and logos

Appeal to Pathos

Pathos- when you try to get into the person’s feeling when you try to persuade them and you do that by your word choices and your expressions.

This picture shows Pathos because they put the picture of person that looks sad and that he doesn’t have the needs to survive as a normal person. The fact that they put the picture its gets to our emotions and shows us that there are other people that are not like us and that are in need. They also use pathos in their word choices. By the two highlighted sentences, they want to tell us that the poor needs us to survive and that without us it is impossible for her to change her world. We have the power to help them live like a normal person.

Textural example:

 President Kennedy’s Inaugural Address ( January 20, 1961)

The speech that he gives appeal to his audiences emotion because he talks about unity meaning that he wants people to make peace and be unified. His words choices are emotional and catches people attention. He says that the more unified we are to more we are stronger and can defeat people that comes there way. He speaks in a way to make people feel the message that he is trying to pass through.

2-

After years of this type of disrespect from your boss, countless hours wasted, birthdays missed… its time that you took a stand.

This sentence is appealing to people's emotion because it gives them the courage to go against something. It talks about what the person actually did to them and it makes them feel bad that they are not doing anything about it. It is like an encouragement for that person to be brave and stand up for him or herself.

Appeal to Ethos

Logos- when you try to get into the persons brain and try to make you think the same way that you do. You try to get into the person’s logic

This is a video of “Don’t text and Drive”. This video is about a kid who got completely damaged by an accident who was due to texting and driving. The kid can barely breathe by himself now and he has to use this machine to help him breathe. It appeal to ethos because it shows that a concern parent who is warning the other parents of how texting while driving can affect their kids life.  They also show a severe case of injury to prove their point of what texting and driving can do.

Textural example:
“As a doctor, I am qualified to tell you that this course of treatment will likely generate the best results”

This is a saying that will appeal to your ethos because you try to persuade as someone who is qualified in medicine. If an expert tells you to do something you will most likely do it because you trust them and you know that the doctor knows more in medical stuffs then a normal person does. It is mostly possible to accept what the doctor gives to you because you trust him enough to do so.

2- "Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom. A man can't ride you unless your back is bent."

Martin Luther King, Jr.

This quote means that in order to change something, you need to have be motivated and work hard for it because no one else can do it for you. This quote is an appeal to ethos because it is said by an expert so you can use it to support an argument. This quote can help you to persuade someone who wants to succeed in life but does not do anything to improve his/her grade.

Appeal to logos

Ethos- is when you are trying to persuade some and you give quotes or examples of experts on the specific thing you trying to persuade of.

This picture is a guy that is stating all the things that smoking did to him. So Its trying to tell us that, these are the effects of smoking and that if you smoke that is what you are going to have and be. It’s a way to say that Tobacco is not good for our health and that it destroys our lives. The picture and the saying is basically a way to get in our mind to say that we should not smoke.

Textural example:
"Do what you feel in your heart to be right - for you'll be criticized anyway. You'll be damned if you do, and damned if you don't." -- Eleanor Roosevelt.

This quote is basically saying that you should do what you think is right because whether u do it well or not you’ll will still get bad criticisms. This is written by a famous person meaning that he probably did that in his life and it got him successful so we should do the same to be able to succeed in life. It is your life so you should do what you please in order to do what is best for you.

2-
"More than one hundred peer-reviewed studies have been conducted over the past decade, and none of them suggests that there is an effective treatment for hair loss."

You can use that sentence when you are trying to persuade the people that there is nothing/ no treatment for hair lost. This sentence is gonna make the people think about, if there studies that proves that it is probably true. The logic is that if they did everything that they can by experiment to try to cure hair lost and there is nothing that comes up, that means that there is nothing that can cure hair lost for real.

Appeal to Ethos, Logos and Pathos
Logos: I would tell them how i would have more time to prepare better for college and i would work and get all the hours that i am missing for community service and also try to make money to help them pay with my college, i would also volunteer in the hospital to show that i have enough experiences to get to medical school.

Pathos and Ethos: I would talk to them like i was sure of my decision and i would also talk to them when it is the right time and also in a calm way. I would tell them that i am not ready for college yet and also that they want me to do the right choice in life and that i think this is the best one for me, that i work well my whole life academically to please them and now i need to do what my own choices because its not about their future but mine.

Supreme headquarters Allied expeditionary force

Appeal to fear and prejudice

He appeals to fear by telling them that the Natzis are really trained but the have to go the war anyways and do their best to succeed because everyone, including him, is counting on them.

He is also using emotive terms to let them know that everyone will be there to support them and will pray for them. He is saying that like they were on there way to an live or die situation.

This commercial is manipulative because by showing two fat tongues, it shows you that this drink is mostly made for fat people. It also focuses on the ZERO part meaning that you can love coke and drink as much as you can and you will loose weight instead of gaining some like the other drinks does. Also at the end, when the eye ball says "i'm not fat" after the tongues called him "Big FAT Liar", it is a way of saying that when you do not drink coke Zero you get fatter.
This commercial is effective because it is showing the adult how they are affecting the little kids when they smoke. They are suppose to be the role model of the Youngers but instead of showing them whats right they show them the wrong things. It is a great anti-smoking commercial because it shows what adults think about kids smoking while they are the ones who started it at first. It probably did make people who watched this video stop smoking.
